The category Non-road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) includes construction machinery as well as mobile equipment used in mining and agriculture. Exhaust emissions from these machines can cause problems for two main reasons:

· Large-scale construction projects can have a very negative impact on urban air quality because the pollution is concentrated in a small area

· Sometimes machinery is used in confined spaces where the exhaust fumes are a health and safety issue for people working in close proximity

Regulations covering exhaust emissions from NRMM have been progressively tightened but are usually at least one step behind those which apply to road vehicles. Therefore the scope exists to retrofit machines with improved exhaust technology to bring them up to, or ahead of, current standards.
