Carbomer 940 is white and loose; it is acidic, hygroscopic and slightly smelly. It is soluble in water, ethanol, and glycerin. The usual concentration is 0.1%～3.0%. Carbomer 940 contains a large number of carboxyl groups in its molecule, so the aqueous solution should be used after neutralization with alkali to reduce the irritation to the skin and mucous membranes. The neutralizer of Carbo 940 can be sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, potassium bicarbonate, borax, amino acids, polar organic amines such as triethanolamine. Laurylamine and stearylamine can be used as neutralizers in non-polar systems. The neutralized carbomer hydrogel is the most viscous between pH 6-11, such as pH12, the viscosity will decrease, and the presence of strong electrolytes can also reduce the viscosity. The gel is unstable, and it is easy to grow mold and lose viscosity when exposed to the sun. Adding antioxidants can slow down the reaction.

How to use Kabo 940 (acrylic resin) and matters needing attention:
1.pH value: The optimum pH value range of Carbo 940 system is 4-10, higher or lower than this range will lead to changes in system viscosity.
2.Components that are not easily compatible in the formula: protein, PVP resin, polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyethoxylated surfactant will interact with unneutralized Carbo 940, so it needs to be partially neutralized before adding Capo 940. 3.Salt and soluble cations: Carbo 940 is sensitive to salts and cations. When the concentration of soluble ions in the component exceeds 0.1%, the dosage of the component should be controlled. If possible, use acidic, neutral or alkaline materials as the matrix of the main drug, use deionized water, add salt after neutralization to grasp the degree of salt's influence on the system, high-valent ions (Ca, Mg, Fe, AI) will Serious damage to the system should be eliminated. Self-converted pollutants (such as Fe, Cu, etc.) will gradually reduce the viscosity of the system and cause the system to become unstable. Preparation of products in stainless steel or non-metal equipment will avoid this situation. In addition, adding EDTA to chelate metal ions can also achieve good results. 4. Insoluble matter: When insoluble components are present, it is difficult for the Carbomer 940 system to present a clear and transparent gel.
